Thirty-three campers at a University of Florida 4-H camp became sick Thursday, according to a UF release.

The campers, ages 8 to 13, were participating at the UF/IFAS Extension Florida 4-H Camp Cloverleaf in Lake Placid and began vomiting and felt nauseous.

The sick campers were assessed by the camp’s on-site medical personnel and staff and were taken to the hospital for observation. All have been discharged.

The remaining 87 campers returned home Friday, the last day of camp.

The camp will be disinfected before a new camp begins July 2.

Pamela Crain of the Highlands County Health Department said an investigation is ongoing. The cause of illness has not been determined.

The UF press release said the health department determined food was not contaminated and the camp was clean.
