Chesapeake city officials helped the Dan Banister Family cut the ribbon on the new Banister Nissan Chesapeake on Battlefield Blvd. on January 12. It was the second ribbon cutting for Banister since he became the sole owner on December 1, 2017 of the Nissan dealerships on Military Highway in Norfolk and the Chesapeake location. The ribbon cutting in Norfolk was held on December 14.

Out of 1,080 Nissan dealerships worldwide there are only 22 African-American-owned stores. Banister, who has been in the car business for more than 20 years, owns two.

Banister advanced from being a General Manger at Victory Nissan to an employee at Hall Nissan then back as a partner at Nissan Chesapeake before becoming its owner.

The ceremony included remarks by Chesapeake Mayor Rick West, Clerk of Circuit Court Dr. Alan Krasnoff, Dwane Cochenour, Executive/GM, and Bishop Kim Brown. Publisher Brenda H. Andrews, who emceed the first ribbon-cutting, served again as the M.C.

Performances were delivered by Earl Bynum and the Mount Unity Choir; and the Destined to Worship Praise Dancers, directed by Dionne Wesley.
